Just a girl who used to be fat...

I have had several people ask me what I do food wise as far as losing weight goes.
Most recently, Katie, asked me if I would post about how I began my "healthy eating", so I thought I'd run it down for those curious.

Six weeks after I had my first son in 2009, I had gone back to the doctor for my postpartum checkup and had noticed I hadn't lost a single pound. I was still at 198 lbs.
I was breastfeeding and really just thought it would "fall off".
WRONG!
So that is when I made up my mind that I HAD to do something.
So many of us (me included) have tried to lose weight so many times and failed for one reason or another... 99% of the time it's lack of motivation.
I've been asked how I stayed motivated.
It's hard to explain, but when I set my mind on REALLY losing the weight, it wasn't hard anymore.
I wasn't resentful, or angry that I had to do it. I just sucked it up and knew it had to be done.
I am a firm believer that it really just has to "click" for you.
You have to finally just say, "okay, screw it, I am doing this and NOTHING is going to stop me".
And that's what I did.
Once I made up my mind, I started out ONLY changing my eating habits.
I had done Weight Watchers in the past and knew it worked, so I started counting POINTS again.
I LIVED on Smart Ones for months. I had one every day for lunch at work.
I also scoured HungryGirl for recipes since she has WW points already calculated for you.
It wasn't hard, really. Once I had decided I was 100% committed to losing weight, I just went for it and did it.
I completely stayed away from fast food (my vice) for the first 3 months of my journey. I couldn't trust myself there, so I just did what I had to until I retrained myself how to eat.
I drank a TON of water, I'm talking nearly a gallon a day.
I just did what I knew I had to.
We all know what's healthy and what we should and shouldn't eat, it's just a matter of committing and DOING it.
One healthy meal at a time. One healthy decision at a time.
Eventually that will lead to another, and another, until it becomes second nature.

What really kept me motivated was seeing the scale go down.
Every time I'd get on the scale and I'd lost a pound or two, I got this crazy high and felt like I could do anything. It was a snowball effect and before I knew it, I had lost over 50 lbs. and dropped nearly 6 sizes.
I was also motivated by people's negative comments.
I had heard a few of the things some people were saying about me and it really just made me push harder and want to show them I could do it.
My clothes not fitting was a huge motivator for me.
I had nothing to wear, as all of my pre-pregnancy 14's were too small, so I poured myself into my maternity jeans.... talk about determination.
I was determined to get back into my old sizes, and even more determined to get into my "skinny jeans" pile that had been shoved in the back of my closet for years.
Another HUGE motivator for me was YOU GUYS! I blogged about my weight, struggles, and successes and you were there to push and encourage me! I can't thank you enough for that. It means more than you will ever know.
It wasn't until I put it all out there in my 'My Soul is Bared' post that I was really held accountable to myself and all of you! I had to start by being 100% honest with myself before I could move forward.
Blogging was a great way for me to be accountable, and I totally recommend it.

In December of last year, I basically just got bored with WW and started counting calories. Don't get me wrong, WW worked and in 3 months I had lost 15 lbs., but I really just thought "I can do this on my own" and went for it.
Starting out I used Sparkpeople to count every single thing that I put in my mouth and I didn't eat over 1200 calories a day.
December is also when I decided to add in exercise.
I started the C25K program and signed up for my first ever 5K in March.
Training really helped me drop some wicked pounds, it seemed to just melt off.
By race day, I had lost nearly 40 lbs. in a 5 month period.
All by watching what I ate and running.

I still keep to a strict 1200-1400 calorie diet.
In recent months, I have branched out into more raw eating- I don't eat nearly as many Smart Ones as I used to, but more salads and veggies.
I buy everything fat free or low fat and substitute nearly every ingredient in any recipe for a lower fat version.
For lunch now, I may have a big salad with cherry tomatoes, low fat cheese, carrots, cucumbers, and fat free Italian dressing.
Or a veggie patty on low calorie wheat bread with mustard, low fat cheese, low fat mayo, lettuce, tomato, and an apple.
Eating out for me is easy now.
It used to KILL me every time we went out to eat because I craved the bad stuff.
Now, I look at it like everyone knows I'm trying to lose weight, so I feel like they are watching to see what I order. 9 times out of 10 that alone makes me order something healthy.
That and I really crave the healthy stuff now.
It's all about re-training your body and listening to it's needs.
Portion control! You can have whatever your heart desires.. IN MODERATION.

I can honestly tell you I feel amazing.
I am so proud of myself for doing this the RIGHT way, and I KNOW once you make the decision to REALLY kick those pounds to the curb, you will too!

I am not a nutritionist or an expert of any kind, I am just a girl who used to be fat.

UPDATE:
After having my second son in November of 2011 I began my post baby weight loss #2.
This time around I have 50 pounds to lose. Stick with me as I journal it all here and fight my way to my ultimate goal of 120 lbs.

Great post today! Your motivation is inspiring. I think the commitment to weight loss is what I've been lacking. I have great plans and intentions, but the first sign of temptation sways me because my commitment is lacking. Time to stop and COMMIT.

Thanks for the awesome post - it is so true that there is no secret, you just have to do it. I love WW and think it is a great program. I also love your honesty - I'm 12 weeks pregnant now and while I know I shouldn't freak out about it, the weight gain thing is a huge concern. Knowing that you made it out on the other side helps me feel ok about the weight gain and know there is something I can do about it when it is all over.

Thank you!

Amen sista! There is no special trick to weight loss, no diets work for very long. It's all about what you eat, what you do for exercise and commitment. It's an every day struggle, not just some fad diet to do for 1 month. It's about a lifestyle change. You got it girl!

I totally <3 you. You're so awesome. I totally just need to DO IT. You're right!

you look awesome :) I have a 3.5 month old and am afraid to jump in too deep with 'dieting' for fear of milk production issues since I'm exclusively bf'ing. How long did you bf for and did doing weight watchers or anything hurt your production or did it not go hand in hand with the same timing of losing weight? Curious :)

So I'm only into week 2 of my journey, but I'm beyond excited and motivated. Your story is such an inspiration that dedication and hard work pays off (both short term and way long term!!!). Thanks so much!!

GREAT job! I am still 20 pounds up from my last pregnancy and now I am 17 weeks pregnant. So while I am watching things now, I know I still have that extra 20# to deal with after baby comes.

I was also wondering the same thing as a PP, how did you keep your milk supply from dropping? I am thinking 1200 cals wouldn't be enough! I am wondering about this as I am a calorie counter (for dieting) and I also breastfeed my kids. So anyhow, trying to plan ahead to what I can do after baby #2 shows up!

SO glad I stumbled across your blog. Congrats to you! This is really awesome and motivating. I had a medical issue and gained 40 lbs in 6 months. Since then I have lost some weight and regained. Ultimately I am at the point where I feel like I am so fat, why bother? Which is really wrong. I have stopped dating. I don't go out as much. It's pathetic, really. I'm 27, living in LA, and not taking advantage of life.

So sorry for blabbing on. Point is, it's great to see that it is possible. I just need to stop feeling sorry for myself and start doing something about it!

Thank you :D

Just found your blog and I am in love with it. I gained almost 60 lbs while pregnant and currently struggling to finish getting those off *only 7 more to go* and lose the other 25 I need to have off before getting pregnant! Very inspired by you!!

Amen! You look great! I thought the weight would just melt off with breast feeding...and it didn't! You are right, it is a decision! You are such an encouragement.

Congratulations on your weight loss! I am doing WW, it seems to be the only thing that works. I am glad that you found something else when WW wasn't appealing to you anymore. That's always great.

Just found you blog...thank you. i am a mother of 3 and with the first 2 I was able to keep my weight under control but after my 3rd it well...exploded! I am 3lbs more than when my 3rd child was born...it kills me to admit it. 224...ouch. For the last year I have been using my bad hip as an excuse not to fix the problem, but now we are talking about having a 4th child and I cannot imagine having a baby and adding more weight. I cannot run, but I can walk...and baby i plan on walking. I am home full time and eating can be tough...but I love idea of tracking things. Thank you for all your great ideas. I cannot wait to say I am 70 lbs lighter. I know it will take time. But time I have. :)

I am so motivated by reading your blog. I two did not lose any weight after my baby and I am also nursing. He is almost 8 months old and I am still wearing maternity pants. It is time for a change. Did you still nurse when you were eating 1200 calories? I am thinking about WW nursing program. Keep it up and thanks for blogging about your experience.

Thanks for posting your story. I had my youngest 10 years ago and gained 60lbs due to forced bed rest during my pregnancy. Over the years I have lost about 20 of those pounds. Every year I get inspired to lose weight and exercise. I usually last two months with minimal results. I would eat right and exercise 4 to 5 times a week. But always find some reason to stop. The last time (June of 2011) I stopped due to my family moving to NC and going through a depression. I started my new weight loss three weeks ago. This time feels different. I have exercised everyday of these last three weeks. I have cut all junk food out. I eat lots of fruit and veggies for snacks and I limit my portions at dinner. Last week after only losing 2lbs in two weeks I decided to help keep my motivation. I went to pinterest and found all the motivation quotes and pictures I could. I printed them out and placed a few on my bathroom mirror, on the fridge, and on the cork board in our exercise room. This has helped. I had just been doing 30 hard minutes in the elliptical. Yesterday I started the 30 day Shred plus 15 mins in the elliptical. I feel great and I am starting to see some results. I think that me working so hard has finally motivated my husband to lose too. I love coming to pinterest everyday and seeing success stories like yours. Reading these really helps keep me motivated. Exercising has now become habit. On weekends I say ok I need to get up at such time in order to get a workout in before whatever I have to do. Thanks. I plan on keeping up with your blog for motivation.

I am in the same place that you were when you started this journey. I am almost 200lbs and have got to make some serious. My MAJOR obstacle is my work schedule. My work day is about 12 hours long with my commute to and from work. I have no time to cook, especially for my 2 year old son. I call my car my dining room on wheels because that is where he eats most of his meals. How did you manage your weight loss by making sure that your kids are still getting to eat but healthy?
