MILF Monday: The Cleanse & Updates

Saturday I hit up the gym for a little afternoon workout.
I am still obsessed with getting those Jillian Michaels arms by summertime.
It's coming along quite nicely.
I want my arms to be BANGIN' in tank tops this summer.
I'll take her abs, too. Mmmkay, thanks.

A lot of you have asked what my arm workout is.
I started out using 10 lb. weights on my biceps. Then moved up to 12's, 12.5's, and am now using 15's on those bad boys. Go heavier with your weights when it's too easy and you can get through every set easily.
I do 4 sets of 8 Hammer Curls. (this is my favorite move for my biceps). Throw heavy ass weights at them things to pump them up! More weight/less reps.
A crapload of walking push-ups, shoulder press (with 12's), tricep kickbacks, dips, you name it.
If my arms burn doing it, then I dig it.
To get rid of the "wings", dips are your best friend. They hurt. You'll cramp. That means it's working.
JUST.KEEP.GOING!
No one wants their arm flab waving back to someone when they wave to you.
Ain't nobody got time for dat!
I don't use machines on my arms, I just prefer free weights.
Plus, you can do those at your house, guys!
Get you a set of 10's and 15's and work those arms out!
Before I had a gym membership I used to work my arms out in my living room while my kids sat on the floor and played.
No excuses!

After the gym Saturday I came home and got to do this...
That kid. He is the orneriest little guy, but I could NOT live without his little Sour Patch self.

Before hitting up the gym, Megan and I went and got our NexGen nails redone.
Every 3 weeks we go to the salon together. We love our NexGen nails.
It is NOT like gel nails, I've had gel nails before and I like NexGen better. Only certain salons do them, so call ahead and see before you go.
not complete without mimosas!
Sunday we woke up and hit the gym early for a good workout.

Then I came home, did some cleaning and decided "meh, I think it's time I tried on my wedding dress".
I haven't put this dress on in 5 years. It's been in MJ's closet since the night we got home from our wedding.
Now, this dress...
a very good angle, which is why I LOVE this picture
I fell in love with it the second I put it on.
It.Was.Beautiful.
And when I got measured for that dress, the lady told me I'd need to order a size 14, probably 16.
I remember her saying those words and my heart sinking to the ground.
My face got really hot and I was embarrassed. ME? A size 16??? How did I let this happen??
I begged my mom to let me order a size 8 in that dress. I told her I was going to lose a lot of weight before my wedding.
She was nervous. She'd heard me talk about losing weight in the past and I'd never done it, so I don't blame her for putting her foot down and saying "no" to such a bold request, especially since she was paying for it.
So we compromised and ordered a size 12.
And by the time I tried on that size 12 dress 2 weeks before my wedding and it wouldn't even come CLOSE to fitting, I was mortified.
As I stood in my sisters room while she tried to make this beautiful dress fit me, it STILL didn't 'click'.
I had to have every last stitch of that dress let out. All the way to a size 16.
And I was still stuffed and poured in that thing like a Thanksgiving turkey.
I was so uncomfortable in it all night, I could barely stand it.
I couldn't sit, I constantly worried about my back fat all night and who was staring at my fat arms.
But I do remember one thing that made me feel beautiful about my wedding day...
my father's speech.
He said "Brandi, you are beautiful always, but tonight you are glowing."
Tears swelled in my eyes as the first thing I thought was "I love that man", but the second thought immediately behind that was "I don't FEEL beautiful".
How sad is that?
To not feel beautiful on your wedding day. Regardless of what everyone else sees or tells you, YOU have to live with yourself and your body, not them!
Anyway,  I have been wanting to try my dress on for some time now, but hadn't gotten around to it.
So yesterday I pulled it out.
And I even said to The Hubs "I don't feel like there's going to be that big of a difference".
You see, in my head, I still think I'm big.
I've talked about this a million times over, when you lose weight it is just as tough MENTALLY as it is PHYSICALLY.
Often times my head is not caught up with my body.
And only time will take care of that, I think.
So I put on my dress and was surprised at what I saw.
It was falling off of my size 6/8 frame.
There is about a 45-50 lb. difference in these photos. 5 years and 2 kids later...
I am proud of that.
Now, what I plan to do with that dress?? I have no idea.
Maybe some cheap alterations and a "Trash the Dress" photoshoot? We'll see...

Now, on to the AdvoCare Cleanse you all have been curious about.
Megan and I talked a few weeks ago and she convinced me to do a cleanse with her.
Okay, cleanses...
I've got to be honest, I've never been a fan. I love food. And cleanses always seemed to me like a "crash diet".
Of course, I was uninformed, so I made opinions about them blindly.
After having Megan tell me about the cleanse, having done it herself three times prior, and me trusting her opinion, KNOWING she does things the same way I do, in a healthy way, I decided I'd try it.
I know that Megan would never steer me in the wrong direction and she would never try and "take the easy way out" which is what I often thought about cleanses.
We both believe in doing things in a healthy, long term, lifestyle-change kinda way.
THAT SAID, we are NOT going to be doing this cleanse for weight loss purposes.
I have said it before, if I don't lose another pound, I am fine with that, as long as I FEEL good about myself.
That's where the cleanse comes in.
I'm having trouble with my eating lately. I've jumped on the MyFitnessPal bandwagon (mamalaughlin1) and have began tracking my food again.
Sometimes, even after living healthy for a long period of time, we need a kickstart.
So with this 10 day cleanse, I will be cutting out sugar, enriched flour, caffeine and dairy.
THAT'S IT.
You take an herbal supplement and drink a very mild fiber drink once a day.
For 10 days.
You can do anything for 10 days!
It is a gentle, herbal cleanse and will NOT have you running to the bathroom every hour. I've heard you can't even really tell a difference in that area.
This is just to jumpstart me again, get me on the right food track, and hopefully break my addiction to Nutella and Honey Peanut Butter.
It's bad, y'all.
I may need an intervention.

Megan and I will be starting this cleanse on March 4th.
And we want y'all do it with us!
We'll post a link up before hand to recipes that you can eat while on the cleanse, since that's usually what people have the hardest time with, is figuring out what you can and can't eat while on it.
This is NOT a meal replacement shake, you are just eating very clean foods and drinking a daily fiber drink.
You can get your cleanse HERE.
Join Megan and I, and let's get back on track!

Your shoulders look really toned in your "after" wedding dress photo! How about you alter it to a super sexy short length and renew your vows with your hubby for your 10 year anniversary? That's the plan I have for mine that is 2 sizes too big now thanks to you :) I'm so glad you're public on MFP, I don't use it but love to get ideas from other peoples stuff...kinda weird to be stalking what you eat but it all helps! You rock my socks off Brandi!

I have very similar feelings about my dress and my wedding day and have gained since then, but am on the weight loss journey now. It is amazing how even that all important wedding day is not always enough of a motivator because you have to truly be ready to lose the weight. Thanks for sharing. That picture is mighty inspiring!

That shirt! I need it. I was thinking, "Oh cool, I just ordered that one from KLR" until I saw the back. I love shirts with a nice little surprise in the back.

I think a Trash the Dress shoot would be a perfect way to celebrate losing so much weight. It's kind alike you're trashing that part of your life.

I just started that cleanse for the first time today. I'm hoping it can help me to eat better too and get past the plateau I've been at awhile. Good luck in yours!

I Love your blog! You have inspired me so much during my weight loss journey. I've lost 107lbs so far and most of time I don't feel like I am smaller. I'm so glad you said "when you lose weight it is just as tough MENTALLY as it is PHYSICALLY." I'm having a hard time with that, and explaining that to people! How do you get yourself to realize you're looking hot? :)

Ok. I think I'm going to do the cleanse. On March 4th I will be exactly 12 weeks postpartum and I've GOT to lose these 7lbs to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight so I can get back to my 'real' weight loss journey.

Love your blog - found you from half my size. I felt the same way on my wedding day - even though I had lost about 20lbs - I was still overweight and couldn't believe that even my own wedding couldn't inspire me enough to lose all the weight. I hate looking at my wedding pictures even though I am bigger now - I just felt like such a bridal failure in my size 12 wedding dress. Amazingly, I have been happily married for almost 15 years now ... :o)

Mama! Such an inspiring post. Although I don't have a ring on my finger (yet), I want to get confident in my body before any kind of big event like that. I hate the self-conscious feeling that comes with the weight.

You looked beautiful then, and now too! Have a good week!

Love this blog post! I was 15kg (33lbs) heavier when I got married, and was so upset when I had to order a size 18. NBow I am a size 8-10 after two kids and losing 55lb. I had a lady from coffee group not even recognise me in my wedding pictures the other day!

Ali said...

Currently I'm about 40lbs less than the day I got married and that's after a baby. :) I can honestly say I only bought my dress because it was on sale, it fit and my mom said I looked thin. In the midst of losing the weight, I donated it. Just because I didn't feel beautiful in it doesn't mean someone else shouldn't. http://bridesagainstbreastcancer.org/

I even included a check for dry cleaning (because, please, I never did it) because I was just so happy to get rid of it. It was really therapeutic. Highly recommend it.

I'm finishing up the Advocare 24 day challenge in which the Herbal cleanse is the first ten days. Let me give you some advice on the fiber drink. First...its NASTY, but having said that, mix it with SUPER COLD water and CHUG CHUG CHUG! plus you only do it the first 3 and last 3 days of the cleanse so its not so bad! Looking forward to hearing how you like it!

Your wedding dress photo kills me! That is SO often. All too often I look at my wedding photos and I'm happy with the progress i made before the big day, but it's not where I want to be. I'm sort of disappointed but then I remind myself, that it's OK for my wedding day not to be where I was physically - because I don't have to look back once I'm older and think that was the skinniest or fittest I ever was... NO I can use it, like you did as a way to realize there was SO much better to come! I can't wait to drop more weight, get healthy and try on my dress and realize that wasn't the last time in my life to be thin, it was only the beginning!
